Concerns are mounting over the potential economic impact of rising global tensions following the reported collapse of diplomatic talks between the United States and Iran, with civil society advocate Edmond Abu cautioning that countries like Sierra Leone could face serious consequences.

Speaking during a media engagement, Abu warned that the breakdown in negotiations—reportedly centered on Iran’s enriched uranium programme—could heighten geopolitical tensions and disrupt global markets. He noted that such developments often trigger increases in the prices of critical commodities, including fuel, gas, and fertilisers.

According to him, African economies, which are already under pressure, are particularly vulnerable to external shocks due to their reliance on imports for energy and agricultural inputs. He stressed that any sustained rise in global prices could worsen the cost-of-living situation for ordinary citizens.

Abu further highlighted that smaller economies often bear the brunt of international conflicts, even when they are not directly involved. Using a metaphor, he described vulnerable nations as the “grass” that suffers when “two elephants” clash, underscoring the indirect but severe impact of global power struggles.

His comments come amid growing concern among economic observers that escalating tensions between major global players could have far-reaching implications for developing countries. Analysts say such situations often lead to inflationary pressures, currency instability, and increased fiscal strain on governments.

Abu concluded by calling for vigilance and stronger regional cooperation among African nations to better withstand potential economic shocks arising from global uncertainties.
