Sierra Leone is set to host the National Mining Week beginning May 20, alongside the 11th gathering of the African Diamond Producers Association (ADPA), in what officials describe as a major platform to promote the country’s mineral sector and attract international investment.
Deputy Minister of Mines and Mineral Resources, Umaru Napoleon Koroma, disclosed that the event will bring together key stakeholders, investors, mining experts, and government officials from across Africa to discuss issues relating to mineral development, investment opportunities, and sustainable mining practices.
According to the Deputy Minister, the national celebration is expected to showcase Sierra Leone’s vast mineral potential while promoting responsible and sustainable mining as a critical driver of national development and economic growth.
He noted that the gathering will also provide opportunities for networking, knowledge sharing, and strengthening cooperation among African countries involved in diamond production and mineral resource management.
The event comes at a time when Sierra Leone continues efforts to position its mining sector as a major contributor to economic transformation, job creation, and revenue generation.
Deputy Minister Koroma recently returned from India, where he engaged with international stakeholders and gained new insights and experiences aimed at supporting the growth and modernization of Sierra Leone’s mining industry.
He stated that the international engagements have provided renewed ideas and opportunities to strengthen global partnerships and improve investment prospects within the country’s mineral sector.
Mining remains one of Sierra Leone’s key economic sectors, with diamonds, iron ore, rutile, bauxite, and gold among the country’s major mineral exports.
