The European Union Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Jacek Jankowski, has raised concerns over the growing issue of drug trafficking, describing it as a major challenge affecting both Sierra Leone and the European Union.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with AYV, Ambassador Jankowski said drug trafficking remains one of the key issues of shared concern between the EU and Sierra Leone, warning that it poses a serious reputational risk for the country.
He, however, acknowledged Sierra Leone’s positive role on the international stage, noting that the country has performed commendably as a member of the United Nations Security Council during the 2024/25 term. He also praised President Julius Maada Bio for his leadership as Chairman of Economic Community of West African States.
According to the ambassador, public attention is often drawn more to negative developments than positive achievements, despite ongoing efforts by Sierra Leone to strengthen its international reputation.
Ambassador Jankowski further expressed hope that the justice ministers of Sierra Leone and the Netherlands would engage in dialogue to address drug trafficking concerns amicably and deepen cooperation in tackling the issue.
