Sierra Leone has emerged as one of the fastest-growing aviation markets in Western and Central Africa, recording an estimated 23% year-on-year increase in aviation passenger arrivals during the first quarter of 2026.
The impressive performance is highlighted in the World Bank’s Tourism Watch Report, released in June 2026, which identifies Sierra Leone as one of the region’s strongest performers in air travel growth.
According to the report, Sierra Leone ranked alongside Chad (25%) and Cabo Verde (24%) among the leading countries driving increased passenger traffic across the region. The findings reflect growing confidence in Sierra Leone as a travel destination and underscore the country’s expanding connectivity with international and regional markets.
The report’s regional analysis shows that most countries in Western and Central Africa experienced positive growth in aviation passenger arrivals. Alongside Sierra Leone, Burkina Faso and Togo also recorded notable increases, reinforcing a broader recovery in the region’s aviation and tourism sectors.
In contrast, a few countries registered declines in passenger arrivals during the same period. São Tomé and Príncipe recorded a 7% decrease, while Gabon and the Republic of Congo each experienced a 15% decline.
Sierra Leone’s strong performance is viewed as a positive indicator of the country’s tourism and economic recovery. The increase in passenger arrivals suggests improved air connectivity, growing investor and visitor confidence, and rising international interest in the country’s tourism potential.
As the government continues to prioritize tourism as a key pillar of economic diversification and sustainable growth, the latest figures position Sierra Leone for continued expansion in the sector throughout 2026. Industry observers believe the sustained rise in air passenger traffic could translate into increased tourism revenues, job creation, and greater opportunities for businesses linked to travel and hospitality.
