The Freetown City Council (FCC) has delivered emergency relief assistance to families affected by the devastating fire that swept through 3D Off Main Road, Congo Town on 27th June, fulfilling a commitment made by Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr during her visit to the disaster site.
The relief intervention, carried out in partnership with Caritas, saw affected households receive food supplies, blankets, and assorted clothing to help ease their immediate hardships as they begin rebuilding their lives.
The fire, which was reportedly caused by an electrical malfunction, destroyed seven homes and partially damaged nine others, leaving several families displaced and in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.
Shortly after the incident, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr visited the affected community to assess the extent of the damage, express solidarity with the victims, and assure residents that the City Council would provide support during their recovery.
The delivery of relief items marks the fulfillment of that pledge and forms part of the Council’s broader efforts to respond to emergencies affecting vulnerable communities across the capital.
In a statement, the FCC reaffirmed its commitment to standing with the affected families throughout the recovery process, emphasising that support for disaster victims remains a key priority.
The Council also acknowledged the contribution of Caritas, whose partnership helped ensure that essential relief supplies reached those most affected by the incident.
The Congo Town fire is the latest in a series of residential fire outbreaks in Freetown that have highlighted growing concerns over electrical safety and the vulnerability of densely populated communities to fire disasters. The incident has renewed calls for greater public awareness on fire prevention measures and improved electrical safety standards to reduce the risk of similar tragedies.
As affected families begin the difficult task of rebuilding their homes and livelihoods, the FCC says it will continue working with partners to provide assistance and support recovery efforts within the community.
