According to reports monitored from the region, the Commissioner was yet to receive reasonable explanation from the education ministry officials as to why school materials were locked up at a time when pupils were going without basic reading and other learning materials.

“This is Sierra Leone. When they want to steal they keep quiet over public property meant for pupils until everybody else forgets and then they sell”, opined Sahr Foday Morsay, a resident of Kono.  Mr. Ady Macauley was said to be visibly angry at the lost time to pupils who could have made good use of these materials months ago to help cushion education costs on their parents and guardians.

The learning materials included books, pens, soaps and other school supplies. School teachers contacted by AYV say delay to distribute the materials was because the Kono District Council could not provide funds to the Ministry of Education staff in Kono to do the needed distribution. “I don’t believe. This could all be part of a grand scheme to steal them”, a primary teacher, who did not want to be identified, told AYV
