The Chief Electoral Commissioner and Chairman of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone, Edmond Sylvester Alpha, has reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to conducting free, fair, and impartial elections ahead of the country’s 2028 general polls.
Speaking on the Commission’s mandate, Mr. Alpha stressed that electoral processes in Sierra Leone will not be influenced by political interests or outcomes. “We stand by our principles that no political outcome or interest will determine the outcome of elections,” he said.
He emphasised that the ECSL remains an independent institution dedicated to serving all political parties and stakeholders equally, noting that fairness and transparency are central to strengthening democratic governance.
Mr. Alpha further called for mutual respect among political actors, stating that democratic progress depends on the ability of stakeholders to engage constructively, even in moments of disagreement.
Observers say the statement comes at a critical time as preparations gradually begin for the 2028 elections, with increasing calls for trust, accountability, and professionalism in the country’s electoral process.
