In the absence of the substantive mayor, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, the Sierra Leone People’s Congress (SLPP) councillors of the Freetown City Council have selected an acting mayor to oversee the administration of the city.
The move comes after the main opposition, the All People’s Congress (APC), called on its elected officials to boycott council activities, resulting in the mayor’s absence from official proceedings.
Speaking exclusively to AYV, SLPP National Publicity Secretary, Moses Mambu confirmed the development, noting that the new acting mayor will soon be presented to both the SLPP and the government for formal recognition. “The councillors have chosen an acting mayor who will run the city’s business effectively until Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr resumes her duties,” Mambu stated.
The acting mayor is expected to ensure continuity in governance, maintain council operations, and oversee ongoing projects in Freetown. Political observers say the decision reflects the SLPP councillors’ commitment to sustaining administrative stability in the city despite partisan disruptions.
The party emphasised that the acting mayor will serve temporarily, with full authority restored to the substantive mayor upon her return. Meanwhile, the council continues to navigate a politically tense environment as the APC boycott persists.
