The All People’s Congress (APC) Party has raised serious concerns over the suitability of Mr. Edmond Sylvester Alpha to serve as Chief Electoral Commissioner for Sierra Leone ahead of the 2028 general elections, following his proposal by President Julius Maada Bio.
Speaking on behalf of the party, Acting National Chairman of the APC, Amb. Osman Foday Yansaneh, questioned Mr. Alpha’s credibility, citing his role during the 2023 Presidential and General Elections.
According to Yansaneh, Mr. Alpha served as Commissioner for the Eastern Region during the 2023 polls — an election the APC and other observers have described as lacking transparency and marked by significant statistical inconsistencies.
The APC maintains that the 2023 electoral process raised serious concerns regarding the credibility of the final results announced. The party further stated that the elections were criticised not only by the APC as the main opposition party, but also by international election observers and reputable electoral experts.
“These condemnations,” the party argued, “constitute both necessary and sufficient grounds to disqualify Mr. Edmond Sylvester Alpha from consideration and appointment as Chief Electoral Commissioner — now and in the future.”
The APC reiterated its longstanding position that all electoral commissioners who were part of the 2023 electoral process should be removed as part of broader electoral reforms aimed at restoring public confidence in Sierra Leone’s democratic system.
The party emphasised that strengthening transparency, accountability, and independence within the Electoral Commission is critical ahead of the 2028 general elections.
As of press time, there has been no official response from the Government or Mr. Alpha regarding the APC’s concerns.
