Sierra Leone’s Presidential Initiative on Climate Change, Renewable Energy and Food Security (PI-CREF) Chairman, Kandeh Yumkella, has stressed the urgent need to build strong and lasting institutions to drive Africa’s renewable energy transformation.
Dr. Yumkella made the call as founding members of the Accelerated Partnership for Renewables in Africa(APRA) concluded their Seniors Working Group Meeting in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Addressing delegates, the PI-CREF Chairman highlighted that Africa’s renewable energy ambitions must be anchored in durable governance systems, transparent policies and coordinated regional frameworks capable of sustaining long-term investments.
He noted that while political declarations are important, institutional strength is what ultimately determines the success of energy transitions across the continent.
The Accelerated Partnership for Renewables in Africa was established to fast-track renewable energy deployment across African countries, mobilise climate finance and strengthen cooperation between African governments and international partners.
Dr. Yumkella underscored that building credible institutions would enhance investor confidence, ensure accountability and accelerate project implementation.
He further emphasised the link between renewable energy expansion, climate resilience and food security—key pillars of Sierra Leone’s national development agenda under PI-CREF.
Observers say Dr. Yumkella’s intervention signals Sierra Leone’s increasing visibility in global climate and energy diplomacy. Through PI-CREF, the country has positioned itself as an advocate for sustainable energy solutions that address climate change while expanding economic opportunity.
The Copenhagen meeting brought together senior technical officials and policymakers from APRA’s founding member states to review progress, strengthen coordination mechanisms and outline the next phase of implementation.
As global momentum builds toward cleaner energy systems, Sierra Leone’s participation in APRA reflects its commitment to regional collaboration and sustainable development anchored on renewable energy, climate action and food security.
