Sierra Leone’s Minister of Information and Civic Education, Hon. Chernor Bah, and the Chairman of the Independent Media Commission (IMC), Mr. Joseph Ebenda Kapuwa Esq,have jointly encouraged students of IMATT College in Freetown to join the call for responsible freedom of expression, thereby encouraging fact-checking to combat misinformation.
IMATT College on Friday, 23rd January 2026, hosted Minister Bah, and Chairman Kapuwa as guest lecturers at the Department of Law in an engagement that took place at the 4th Floor of the IMATT College Kingtom Campus.
Welcoming the guests, the Proprietor and Board Member of IMATT College, Amadu Justice Bah, expressed appreciation for their presence and highlighted the institution’s commitment to quality and efficient education.
In his lecture, Minister Chernor Bah spoke on the oversight role and legal mandate of his ministry, particularly in regulating the social media space. He emphasized responsible freedom of expression, encouraged fact-checking to combat misinformation, and assured media practitioners of his commitment to press freedom. He also disclosed ongoing efforts to develop policies and a Data Protection Law to regulate digital media and protect citizens’ rights to information.
Delivering a lecture on the digital media frontier, Joseph Ebenda Kapuwa Esq explained the role of the IMC in regulating both traditional and emerging online media platforms. He noted that the Commission is developing compliance measures for blogs and online broadcasters to ensure professionalism, credibility, and ethical standards.
The Head of the Law Department, IMATT College, Mohamed Wurie Bah Esq, described the engagement as a valuable opportunity for students to gain practical insight into media regulation and public policy. The session ended with an interactive question-and-answer segment.
