The leadership of the Sierra Leone Bar Association (SLBA), led by its President, Mrs. Tuma Adama Gento-Kamara, held a high-level engagement with the Honourable Chief Justice, His Lordship Komba Kamanda, to explore ways of strengthening collaboration between the Bar and the Bench, with a focus on enhancing ethical standards within the legal profession.
Welcoming the SLBA executive, the Honourable Chief Justice emphasized that a strong and ethical legal profession is vital to maintaining the integrity of the Judiciary. He outlined key reforms undertaken by the Judiciary and called for the Bar’s active support in ensuring their successful implementation.
The Chief Justice took the opportunity to commend the SLBA for its participation in the recent Assize Service, which marked the official opening of the 2025/2026 Judicial Year.
“The turnout was impressive, and we are grateful for your participation,” the Chief Justice noted.
During the meeting, the Chief Justice raised concerns regarding inappropriate courtroom attire among some legal practitioners. He referenced multiple complaints from Judges about lawyers appearing in court wearing miniskirts, brown shoes, slippers, and other forms of dress that contravene the Legal Practitioners’ Code of Conduct. He instructed the SLBA President to remind members of their responsibility to maintain professional dress standards. He further announced that Judges have been directed not to hear any lawyer who appears in court improperly dressed.
In closing, the Honourable Chief Justice reaffirmed his commitment to continued dialogue with the Bar and expressed confidence in their shared mission to strengthen the rule of law and promote public trust in the justice system.
Responding on behalf of the SLBA, President Mrs. Tuma Adama Gento-Kamara thanked the Chief Justice for his openness and collaborative approach. She assured him of the Bar Association’s unwavering support and commitment to upholding the ethics and standards of the legal profession.
