President Julius Maada Bio has reaffirmed Sierra Leone’s unwavering commitment to constitutional democracy, declaring that unconstitutional changes of government have “no place” in the country.
Delivering a firm message at the 17th Armed Forces Day commemoration held at the Julius Maada Bio Parade Ground, Wilberforce Barracks, the Commander-in-Chief used the occasion not only to honour fallen heroes but to restate the military’s role in safeguarding — not governing — the nation.
Addressing officers and soldiers of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF), President Bio emphasized that professionalism, discipline, and loyalty to constitutional order must remain the bedrock of military service. He stressed that true military transformation extends beyond modern equipment and operational strength to include adherence to democratic values and respect for civilian authority.
“Today’s RSLAF does not rule the people but protect them,” he declared, underscoring a clear distinction between past eras of military intervention and the present democratic dispensation.
The President’s remarks come at a time when parts of West Africa have experienced a resurgence of military coups, raising concerns about democratic backsliding in the region. As current Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States, Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Bio reiterated his regional.
