In a landmark move, the Chief Justice Komba Kamandatoday officially launched the Appeals Court sitting for the Southern and Eastern regions at Kenema.
This marks the first time the Appeals Court is convening outside the capital, Freetown, bringing justice closer to the grassroots. Justice Kamandaemphasized that many citizens face financial and logistical challenges when appealing cases in Freetown, making access to justice difficult. “It is prudent to bring the court to the doorsteps of the people who find it difficult, due to expenditure, to appeal their cases when they are dissatisfied with outcomes,” he said.
Four justices, including Adrian Fisher, will preside over 30 cases over the next two weeks. Court sessions are currently underway, with locals turning out in large numbers to witness proceedings.
This initiative underscores the judiciary’s commitment to improving access to justice and enhancing public confidence in the legal system across Sierra Leone.
