The Hospital according to Harish Agnani, Representative from Choithram Foundation, does not provide hundred percent charity.

He said there is no funding coming from the Indian Government to the Hospital, adding that the Hospital has nothing to do with the Indian Government in terms of funding.

The Hospital he went on was built in the name of Pa Choithram and it is now purely run by Choithram International Foundation.

He said if there were funding coming from the Indian Government according to some misrepresented media reports, it would have been written on its entrance signboard; ‘Indian Charity Hospital’ and not ‘Choithram Memorial Hospital’ as it is now.

“If I am doing a charity I will put my name there and not another person’s name” he said, adding further that even now that the hospital waving out part payments for patients is also charity.

He said: “So if anyone says the hospital is a charity hospital, he/she is right because Choithram is and has always been waving out payments for several Sierra Leonean patients who cannot meet their bills. We are not 100% charity but we have been doing several charity services in the past and we will continue to do more”.

It can be recalled that after the visit of the Honourable Vice President of India, Shri Venkaiah Naidu to Sierra Leone, he twitted that he appreciates the commendable work being rendered by the Choithram Charity Hospital in the field of Health Care and in providing free medical treatment facilities to the poor and the needy in Sierra Leone.

Responders were quick to state that he was misinformed and that Choithram is the most expensive Health Facility in the country with some even arguing that the hospital do not provide free medical care.
