The Minister of Communication, Madam Salima Mornorna Bah has commended the management of Africell for its outstanding commitment in elevating women to top management positions within the company.

This commendation came during the Minister’s address at Africell’s 2024 annual retreat, where she highlighted the telecommunication giant’s pioneering efforts in embracing and domesticating the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs).

Africell Sierra Leone stands out as a trailblazer in the corporate landscape by being the only company in the country that has not only signed but is actively implementing the Women’s Empowerment Principles.

This signifies a significant step towards fostering a more inclusive and gender-equitable workplace, setting an inspiring precedent for other organizations to follow.

The Minister expressed his admiration for Africell’s dedication to breaking the glass ceiling and creating opportunities for women to excel in leadership roles. He emphasized the pivotal role that women play in driving innovation, creativity, and sustainable development within the corporate sphere.

“I applaud Africell Sierra Leone for its unwavering commitment to promoting gender diversity in its leadership ranks. By actively domesticating the Women’s Empowerment Principles, Africell is not only talking the talk but walking the walk in creating a workplace that truly values and leverages the unique contributions of both men and women,” remarked the Minister.

The Women’s Empowerment Principles, developed by UN Women and the United Nations Global Compact, serve as a guide for businesses to promote gender equality and empower women in the workplace, marketplace, and community. By embracing these principles, Africell Sierra Leone is not only fostering a more inclusive working environment but is also contributing to the broader societal goal of advancing gender equality.

During the annual retreat, Africell Sierra Leone showcased its commitment to empowering women through various initiatives, including mentorship programs, leadership development opportunities, and policies that support work-life balance. The company’s leadership underscored the importance of diversity and inclusion as integral components of its corporate culture and future success.

As the Minister concluded his address, he encouraged other companies to take inspiration from Africell’s progressive approach and consider adopting similar measures to promote gender diversity and inclusion within their organizations.

Africell Sierra Leone’s dedication to gender equality serves as a beacon of hope and a testament to the transformative impact that businesses can have on society when they actively embrace and implement principles that empower and uplift women.

As the only company in the country leading this charge, Africell Sierra Leone is undoubtedly paving the way for a more equitable future in the corporate world.
