Former Vice President of Sierra Leone, Alhaji Chief Sam Sumana, has petitioned the All People’s Congress (APC) to amend its constitution, citing a discriminatory clause that contradicts the country’s 1991 Constitution.
Specifically, Sumana objects to a provision that disqualifies him and others from contesting leadership positions within the party, despite the national constitution guaranteeing every citizen’s right to participate.
Sumana has formally petitioned the APC to review its constitution and ensure fairness and inclusivity. He has also taken his dispute to the Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC), seeking redress ahead of the party’s preparations for upcoming elections.
Sumana reaffirmed his loyalty to the APC, stating “I am APC, I live APC, and I will die APC,” while urging the party to focus on unity, discipline, and fairness.
Sumana has declared his intention to run for the APC flagbearer position ahead of the 2028 general elections. He was controversially dismissed as Vice President in 2015 but was reinstated as a member of the APC after a lengthy process.
Sumana emphasised the importance of unity and cohesion within the APC, urging members to put the past behind them and focus on rebuilding the party.
Sumana’s petition and renewed commitment to the APC could reshape the dynamics of the party’s leadership race and set the tone for the party’s strategy heading into the 2026 elections.
His appeal for unity, constitutionalism, and fair play could have implications for Sierra Leone’s opposition politics and the country’s overall political landscape.
