President Julius Maada Bio has appealed to Members of Parliament to pass the Constitutional Amendment Bill, urging lawmakers to place the interests of the people and the future of Sierra Leone’s democracy above political considerations.
“I therefore make a clear and solemn appeal: let this Bill be passed now. Let Honourable Members vote ‘Yes’, not for a party, not for an individual, but for the people and the future of democracy in Sierra Leone,” President Bio said.
The President urged MPs to approach the vote as a matter of national duty, warning that their decision would have consequences beyond the immediate parliamentary proceedings.
“I appeal to your sense of duty. The decision before you will not end with the vote. It will be remembered by generations yet unborn,” he said.
According to President Bio, the passage of the Bill would help determine whether Sierra Leone continues to strengthen its democratic institutions or allows what he described as constitutional uncertainty and exclusion to persist.
He further argued that the decision would have implications for women, young people and the wider citizenry.
“Your decision will influence whether our daughters inherit a Constitution that recognises their equal right to lead, whether our young people are given a meaningful voice in shaping their future, and whether citizens continue to believe that Parliament can rise above division and act in the interest of the entire nation,” the President stated.
President Bio’s appeal comes as Parliament continues consideration of the proposed constitutional reforms, with lawmakers expected to determine the fate of the Bill through the required legislative process.
The President’s intervention places renewed focus on the responsibility of MPs as representatives of the people, particularly as Parliament considers amendments that could shape Sierra Leone’s constitutional and democratic framework for years to come.
