National Grand Coalition’s (NGC), Jesmed Foday-Mamie Suma, has welcomed Sierra Leone’s hosting of the 2026 ECOWAS Summit, describing it as a significant opportunity to enhance the country’s regional profile, promote tourism, and showcase its economic and investment potential.
Speaking to AYV, Suma said the summit presents Sierra Leone with a unique platform to strengthen its standing within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) while creating opportunities for local businesses and attracting international attention.
However, he cautioned that hosting a high-profile international gathering should not be viewed as an economic strategy in itself, stressing that the long-term benefits would depend on prudent planning, responsible management, and accountability.
“The benefits will depend on how responsibly it is planned and managed,” Suma stated. “Those who expect economic gains have a valid point, as the summit can create business opportunities for hotels, transport operators, suppliers, and other local enterprises.”
He acknowledged that concerns over the financial implications of hosting the summit are equally valid, noting that citizens have every right to demand transparency and fiscal discipline in the use of public funds.
“We must avoid excessive borrowing or unnecessary spending that leaves the country worse off after the event,” he cautioned.
According to him, the success of the summit should not be measured solely by the smooth conduct of the conference but by the lasting economic and developmental impact it leaves on Sierra Leone and its people.
“My position is simple: I support Sierra Leone hosting the summit, provided it is done responsibly, transparently, and in a way that leaves a lasting economic benefit for the people, not just a successful conference,” Suma concluded.
Sierra Leone is set to host the 2026 ECOWAS Summit of Heads of State and Government, an event expected to bring together regional leaders, policymakers, diplomats, and development partners to deliberate on key issues affecting West Africa, including regional integration, peace and security, economic cooperation, and sustainable development. The summit is also anticipated to provide opportunities for local businesses and further position Sierra Leone as a destination for regional and international engagements.
