The Sierra Leone Airports Authority (SLAA) has taken a bold step forward in aviation modernization with the official launch of Performance-Based Navigation (PBN) at Freetown International Airport.

This milestone follows the successful commissioning of the ultramodern terminal by His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio, which has already driven a significant rise in flights and passenger traffic. Building on this momentum, SLAA is consolidating these gains by implementing advanced navigation systems designed to ensure safer skies, greener operations, and enhanced efficiency.

General Manager Mr. Jack Massaquoi emphasized Sierra Leone’s commitment to a safe, environmentally responsible, and cost-effective aviation system. He noted that the project is being spearheaded by the African Flight Procedure Programme, with technical support from the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (SLCAA).

Minister of Transport and Aviation, Ambassador FandayTuray, explained that PBN replaces conventional ground-based navigation aids with cutting-edge satellite technology, enabling aircraft to navigate with pinpoint accuracy. He stressed that this transition will revolutionize flight operations at Freetown International Airport, aligning Sierra Leone with global aviation modernisation standards.

Key Benefits of PBN Implementation:

– ✅ Enhanced safety margins during adverse weather conditions

– ✅ Reduced fuel consumption and shorter flight times

– ✅ Lower operational costs for airlines

– ✅ Reduced environmental impact through greener procedures

“With PBN, Sierra Leone Airports Authority strengthens its position as a credible air navigation service provider in West Africa. This milestone ensures our skies remain safe, efficient, and sustainable, while positioning Sierra Leone as a regional leader in aviation modernisation,” said Mr. Massaquoi.

This achievement underscores SLAA’s dedication to advancing aviation governance, investing in new technologies, and prioritizing safety while facilitating growth at Sierra Leone’s only international gateway.
