The recent fire outbreak that gutted the North-West Region Galaxy Radio FM 106.1 in Lungi, Kafu-Bullomchiefdom, Port Loko district is reported to have destroyed equipment and properties worth millions of Leones.
Secretary General of the Sierra Leone Broadcasters’ Association (SiLBA), Daniel M. Amara, said the cause of the unfortunate incident on Galaxy Radio, like the previous fire incident that razed Radio Bankhi-Solofaray in Kukuna town, Bramaia chiefdom, Kambiadistrict to ash on January 9, 2026, is yet to be established.
He said, “We are completely devastated by these shocking incidents that have affected three radio stations within six weeks, especially as we certify our members and scout for support towards the reconstruction and restoration of operations of two already affected radio stations in the same North-West Region, Radio Bankhi-Solofaray and Voice of Youth”.
Stanley Bangura Jr., President of SiLBA said, “Let me use this opportunity on behalf of our association, to empathise with the Boards, Managements, and staffs of Galaxy Radio and other stakeholders, including the community for this huge loss. The incident has added pressure on the Association in its fundraising drive.”
In that regard, SiLBA continues to appeal to its partners, media and development stakeholders, and the public, for urgent funding, technical and logistics supports to the reconstruction of these three radio stations, restoration of operations, and fire-prevention training.
Station Manager, Dauda Chernor Jalloh, said the extent of damage caused that has resulted in the destruction of computers, transmitters, furniture, office records and other operational equipment worth millions of leones, is yet to be fully assessed.
SiLBA is a national umbrella media-interest and a membership-based company incorporated in 2022 to promote cooperation and best practices among broadcasters, and safeguard their rights, collective interests, and welfare.
