Sierra Leone’s First Lady, Dr. Fatima Maada Bio, has officially handed over agricultural food-processing equipment to women engaged in farming and agro-processing activities across the country, in a move aimed at boosting agricultural productivity and supporting food security.
The initiative was made possible through a partnership with the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency, following an appeal by the First Lady for support to women actively involved in agriculture.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Dr. Fatima Maada Bio explained that extensive consultations and assessments were conducted nationwide to identify women who are genuinely committed to agricultural production and agro-processing and who would benefit most from the equipment.
She noted that supporting women in agriculture remains a priority, emphasising their critical role in food production, economic development, and community well-being.
According to the First Lady, the intervention complements the government’s flagship agricultural programme, Feed Salone, which seeks to strengthen food security, increase local production, and reduce dependence on food imports.
Dr. Fatima Maada Bio said providing women farmers and agro-processors with modern equipment will help improve productivity, add value to agricultural products, create economic opportunities, and enhance livelihoods across the country.
She expressed appreciation to TIKA for responding positively to her request and for supporting efforts to empower women in agriculture through the provision of essential food-processing machines.
The First Lady described the partnership as an important contribution to the advancement of women’s economic empowerment and the development of the agricultural sector.
Beneficiaries are expected to use the equipment to improve processing capacity, reduce post-harvest losses, and increase the quality and market value of agricultural products.
The initiative forms part of broader efforts to strengthen agricultural development, promote women’s participation in the economy, and support national food security objectives in Sierra Leone.
