Sierra Leone’s First Lady, Dr. Fatima Maada Bio, has called for increased investment in the country’s film industry, describing the creative sector as a key driver of youth empowerment, cultural promotion, and economic development.
The First Lady made the appeal during the launch of the Sierra Leone Film Industry Labour and Marketing Guild (SL FILM GUILD) National Strategic Development Plan 2026–2030, held at the MiattaConference Centre in Freetown.
Addressing filmmakers, policymakers, development partners, and stakeholders in the creative industry, Mrs. Bio emphasized the need for stronger support to help unlock the full potential of Sierra Leone’s film sector. She noted that a thriving film industry could create employment opportunities for young people, preserve the nation’s cultural heritage, and contribute significantly to economic growth.
The First Lady also encouraged filmmakers to tell authentic African stories that showcase Sierra Leone’s rich history, traditions, and values. She stressed the importance of producing content that highlights the experiences of women and young people while promoting positive narratives about the country.
“Africans must tell their own stories,” she said, urging industry practitioners to use film as a tool for education, inspiration, and national development.
The launch of the National Strategic Development Plan 2026–2030 marks a significant milestone for Sierra Leone’s film industry. The five-year roadmap is expected to strengthen institutional structures, enhance professional standards, improve marketing opportunities, and promote sustainable growth within the sector.
Stakeholders expressed optimism that the implementation of the strategic plan will help position Sierra Leone’s film industry for greater recognition both locally and internationally, while creating new opportunities for filmmakers, actors, producers, and other creative professionals.
The event brought together representatives from government institutions, the entertainment industry, development organizations, and members of the creative community, all committed to advancing the growth and professionalism of Sierra Leone’s film sector.
