Sierra Leone’s First Lady, Fatima Maada Bio, has represented both Sierra Leone and the African continent at the Fostering the Future Global Coalition Summit, held at the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C.
The high-level summit, convened on the invitation of MelaniaTrump, First Lady of the United States, brought together global leaders, policymakers, and development advocates to deliberate on building a more inclusive and sustainable future for children and communities worldwide.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Bio expressed appreciation for the opportunity to participate in the global dialogue, describing the summit as a vital platform for collaboration and the exchange of ideas. She emphasized her role as President of the Organization of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD), noting that she was proud to amplify the voices and aspirations of African women and girls on the international stage.
Dr. Bio highlighted the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in shaping the future of education, healthcare, and youth empowerment. She stated that AI offers unprecedented opportunities to expand access to quality education through digital platforms, personalize learning experiences, and bridge long-standing development gaps, particularly across Africa.
“For Africa, this presents a powerful avenue to accelerate progress—enabling innovation, strengthening healthcare systems, and equipping our youth with the skills needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving global economy,” she noted.
However, the First Lady cautioned that the adoption of AI must be guided by responsibility, inclusivity, and ethical standards. She stressed the importance of ensuring that technology serves as a tool for equity rather than division, calling for increased investment in digital literacy, infrastructure, and cross-border collaboration.
She further underscored the need for global partnerships in addressing shared challenges, noting that collaboration beyond borders remains critical to securing a brighter future.
“Together, we must continue to invest in our people, strengthen partnerships, and champion innovative solutions that will secure a more inclusive and sustainable future for generations to come,” she said.
Dr. Bio’s participation at the summit reinforces Sierra Leone’s growing engagement in global development conversations and highlights Africa’s active role in shaping policies that impact the future of children and young people worldwide.
