Sierra Leone’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Alhaji Timothy Musa Kabba, is attending the 49th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union (AU) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where member states are meeting to consider key policy decisions ahead of the AU Mid-Year Coordination Summit scheduled for Cairo, Egypt, later this year.
Speaking from the Ethiopian capital, Minister Kabbaexplained that the Executive Council is responsible for deliberating on and adopting draft decisions that will be presented to the Assembly of Heads of State and Government for consideration during the upcoming summit.
Beyond the official agenda, the Minister disclosed that Sierra Leone is using the opportunity to intensify diplomatic engagements aimed at securing support for the country’s candidate to the International Criminal Justice Court, Professor Charles Jalloh.
According to Minister Kabba, Sierra Leone’s campaign has received the endorsement of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and the government is now engaging fellow AU member states to garner broader continental backing for Prof. Jalloh’scandidature.
“On the margins of the meeting, we are securing support from AU member states for our ECOWAS-endorsed Sierra Leonean candidate for the International Criminal Justice Court, Professor Charles Jalloh,” the Minister stated.
He described Prof. Jalloh as a distinguished international legal scholar and jurist, noting that he recently completed a successful tenure as a member of the International Law Commission and currently serves as a Professor of Law at the University of Miami in Florida, United States.
The government’s diplomatic outreach underscores Sierra Leone’s continued efforts to enhance its visibility and influence within international legal and multilateral institutions while promoting qualified Sierra Leoneans for global leadership positions.
