The Opposition Leader in Parliament, Hon. Abdul Kargbo, has signaled that the All People’s Congress (APC) Party is preparing additional measures, which he referred to as Plans B, C, D and more, in protest against the appointment of Edmond Sylvester Alpha as Chairman of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL).
Speaking in an interview with AYV, Hon. Kargbodescribed the party’s recent boycott of governance activities as “Plan A,” indicating that further steps are being considered to express what he termed the party’s frustration over the appointment.
According to him, the APC views the appointment as a breach of a previously signed political Agreement among key stakeholders. He argued that the understanding reached under that Agreement should have guided decisions relating to the leadership of the country’s electoral management body.
“For the APC, the appointment of Edmond Sylvester Alpha is a direct breach of the Agreement that we signed. If this Agreement has been breached, then we have to go back to where we came from,” Kargbostated.
He emphasised that the party’s reaction is specific to Alpha’s appointment, noting that the APC would not have taken its current stance had another individual been appointed to the position.
The controversy surrounding the ECSL chairmanship has heightened political tensions, with observers warning that prolonged disagreements over electoral governance could impact dialogue and cooperation between the ruling government and the opposition.
As of press time, there has been no formal announcement from the APC detailing what its next line of action will entail. Political analysts say the coming days will be critical in determining whether the standoff escalates or gives way to renewed engagement among stakeholders.
