In a major step toward improving access to clean and safe drinking water in Sierra Leone, GOAL Sierra Leone, with funding from Charity Water, has completed 109 new water points across Kenema and Moyamba districts.
The official handing over ceremony took place on the 2nd and 3rd of October 2025, marking another milestone in the organisation’s commitment to ensuring safe water and sanitation for all.

GOAL Sierra Leone commissioned 82 new water points and 7 sanitation facilities across rural communities in the Kenema district — part of a broader effort to ensure that every household has access to safe drinking water.
The project also includes the construction of toilet blocks in schools and healthcare centres — a move expected to reduce waterborne diseases and improve hygiene standards, especially among women and children.
During the handover ceremony, GOAL Sierra Leone’s leadership emphasised the organisation’s long-term vision of achieving 100 percent district-wide water coverage in Kenema and Moyamba.
Country Director for Goal Sierra Leone, Getu Woyessa Debella, said one of the aims of Goal Sierra Leone is to provide access to safe drinking water and improved sanitation for all.
Paramount Chief Fayia Sundifu Brima Sovula IV, of Kamajiechiefdom, who also double as the National Secretary General of the National Council of Paramount Chief in Sierra Leone, welcomed Goal’s initiative, noting that it is one that is best for his people.
He recalled that before Goal’s intervention, his people were having lots of challenges to access safe drinking water but that with the help of Goal and its partners, the chiefdom now enjoys easy access to safe drinking water and proper sanitation.
A resident in Tunkia chiefdom in the Kenema district, Ibrahim Mansaray, also joined the showering of thanks and appreciations to Goal Sierra Leone.
Since 2018, GOAL Sierra Leone has constructed over 742 water points across the two districts — bringing clean water closer to thousands of residents, healthcare centres, and schools.
The event also paid tribute to the late Agatha Jenneh Bayoh, a GOAL staff member remembered for her service and dedication to the cause of clean water for all.
In Moyamba district, GOAL Sierra Leone constructed 27 water points and 6 sanitation blocks across health and educational facilities.
The project has transformed the lives of several rural communities that previously struggled with unsafe water sources and poor sanitation facilities.
Local authorities praised GOAL Sierra Leone and Charity Water for their contribution toward improving public health and sustainable development in the district.
As GOAL Sierra Leone officially hands over these facilities to the district councils, the message remains clear — clean water and sanitation are not privileges but fundamental rights.
Through continued collaboration between government, development partners, and the communities themselves, this project stands as a beacon of hope and progress for rural Sierra Leone.
