The Government of Sierra Leone has signed a joint communiqué with religious leaders aimed at promoting tolerance and reinforcing national cohesion across the country.
Speaking on the development, the Minister of Social Welfare, Melrose Karminty, said the initiative is designed to strengthen interfaith harmony and address growing concerns over divisive rhetoric.
She expressed concern about recent statements by some religious clerics, describing them as troubling signs of rising extremism. According to the Minister, the dialogue was convened to confront issues of hate speech and intolerance, which threaten the country’s long-standing tradition of peaceful coexistence among different religious groups.
Minister Karminty noted that the engagement concluded with a firm commitment from religious leaders to uphold Sierra Leone’s reputation for religious harmony. The communiqué also outlines mechanisms to tackle hate speech, ensuring that individuals found culpable will face legal consequences without interference from any religious institution.
Observers say the agreement marks a proactive step by the government and faith leaders to safeguard unity and prevent the spread of extremism, while reinforcing the values of tolerance and mutual respect in Sierra Leone.
