The Government of Sierra Leone has on Wednesday December 17, 2025 formally responded to the United States’ decision to impose expanded entry restrictions on Sierra Leonean nationals, describing the move as a serious concern while reaffirming its commitment to sustained diplomatic engagement to address the issues raised.
In a press release issued on Tuesday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Government confirmed that it has taken note of a proclamation by the United States Government dated December 16, 2025, which places Sierra Leone under full entry restrictions. The country had previously been subject to partial limitations under earlier U.S. immigration measures.
According to the release, the U.S. Government expanded its list of countries facing partial or full entry restrictions, citing concerns including visa overstay rates, compliance with the repatriation of removable nationals, and broader national security considerations. Sierra Leone has now been moved from partial to full restriction status.
Reacting to the development, the Government of Sierra Leone emphasized that it remains fully committed to strengthening international cooperation and constructively addressing immigration-related concerns raised by the United States.
“The Government is cognizant that these restrictions are subject to review,” the statement noted, adding that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation is actively engaged in ongoing dialogue with U.S. authorities. It disclosed that progressive steps have already been taken to respond to the issues identified by the U.S. Government.
The release further underscored Sierra Leone’s continued adherence to its obligations under international law and existing bilateral and multilateral frameworks. Authorities said efforts are being intensified to enhance document security, improve repatriation processes, and strengthen information-sharing mechanisms in line with global best practices, with the aim of achieving sustainable relief from the restrictions.
Acknowledging public anxiety over the decision, the Government assured citizens that the matter remains a top national priority. It appealed for patience as consultations with U.S. counterparts continue, stressing that diplomatic engagements are ongoing and focused on resolving the concerns in a mutually beneficial manner.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation encouraged the public to seek official updates through established government communication channels and reiterated its commitment to protecting the interests of Sierra Leonean citizens at home and abroad.
