Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Africell, ShadiGerjawi, has described the relaunch of Sierratel as a “national moment,” marking what he says is a bold step in restoring Sierra Leone’s telecom strength.
Speaking at the official announcement of a new Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) agreement between Africell and the Government of Sierra Leone, Gerjawi stated:
“Sierra Leoneans can once again say with pride: ‘Our national network is back.’ And Africell is proud to be the partner that made it possible.”
The agreement, signed with the Government of Sierra Leone, will see Sierratel relaunched as a full MVNO service, providing voice, data, and mobile money services from day one. Under the model, Sierratelremains fully state-owned while Africell provides the network infrastructure, technology, and commercial investment.
Gerjawi emphasised that the arrangement is not privatisation, stressing that Sierratel “is not being sold, but revived,” with the government retaining ownership of all assets while beginning to generate revenue immediately.
He also highlighted that provisions have been made to address staff concerns, including outstanding salaries and benefits, with Africell committing to shoulder part of the financial obligations as part of the transition process.
According to him, the revamped Sierratel will focus on accessibility, flexibility, and inclusion, offering nationwide services, customizable bundles, expanded mobile money access, and improved customer support.
“To demonstrate our commitment, Africell has seconded one of its senior executives, Joe AbassBangura, to serve as Managing Director of the Sierratel MVNO,” he announced, describing the move as key to ensuring strong leadership and operational success.
Gerjawi concluded by dedicating the initiative to Sierra Leone’s young population, saying the redesigned network is built to support digital innovation, entrepreneurship, and connectivity for the next generation.
“This is about restoring confidence, delivering value, and building a national asset for the future,” he added.
