The Africa Young Voices (AYV) Media Empire has paid a solidarity visit to the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) following a fire outbreak that caused significant damage to parts of the national broadcaster’s facilities, including the office of Deputy Director General, Mohamed Asmieu Bah.
The delegation was led by AYV’s Managing Director, Umaru Fofana, who conveyed heartfelt sympathy on behalf of the company’s Chief Executive Officer, management, and staff. During the visit, the team also assessed the extent of destruction caused by the blaze.
Presenting a cheque of NLe10,000 to support recovery efforts, Fofana described the incident as unfortunate and encouraged SLBC’s management and staff to remain resilient. He expressed optimism that restoration efforts would not only rebuild the damaged sections but improve them beyond their previous state.
Director General of SLBC, Josephine Fatmata Kamara, expressed appreciation for the timely gesture, noting that the Corporation was already undergoing a facelift when the fire occurred. She described the incident as a major setback to ongoing reforms and infrastructural upgrades.
Kamara called on individuals, corporate institutions, and development partners to support the rebuilding process, emphasizing the importance of strengthening the country’s public broadcaster.
She thanked AYV for its show of solidarity and echoed calls for further assistance from philanthropists and corporate bodies.
The fire, which broke out on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at about 11:30 a.m., was brought under control through the swift intervention of staff and emergency responders, preventing what officials say could have been a far more devastating disaster.
