The Government of Sierra Leone has officially declared Thursday, 4th September 2025, as a public holiday in observance of the feast of Mawlid al-Nabi, the celebration of the birth of the Prophet of Islam.

According to an official notice, the religious feast will be observed on Thursday, 4th September 2025, prompting the government to designate the day as a nationwide public holiday to allow for extended observance and reflection.

Moulid-Un-Nabi, also known as Mawlid, is an important event in the Islamic calendar, marking the birth of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The day is traditionally observed with prayers, sermons, recitations from the Holy Qur’an, and other religious activities that reflect on the life, teachings, and example of the Prophet.

The Government’s decision underscores its recognition of the religious and cultural significance of the day, which brings together Muslim communities in Sierra Leone and around the world in remembrance of the Prophet’s guidance on faith, peace, and humanity.

With the declaration, businesses, schools, government offices, and institutions nationwide will suspend normal activities on Thursday, allowing citizens to fully partake in the celebrations.

The notice, signed and released on Tuesday, 2nd September 2025, carries the official seal of the President’s Office, making the announcement legally binding across the country.

This year’s Moulid-Un-Nabi comes at a time when Sierra Leone continues to embrace peaceful coexistence and interfaith harmony, with both Muslims and Christians often joining each other in solidarity during major religious celebrations.

The Government has therefore encouraged citizens to use the occasion not only for prayers and reflection but also to promote unity, peace, and national development.
