The Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Freetown City Council (FCC), and the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening the enforcement of the FCC Solid and Liquid Waste Collection Bylaws, 2024.
The agreement, signed in Freetown on Monday, 9 June 2026, seeks to enhance collaboration among the three institutions in promoting effective sanitation management, environmental protection, public health, and urban safety across the capital city.
Under the terms of the partnership, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, FCC, and the Sierra Leone Police will work closely to improve public awareness on waste management regulations, ensure lawful and effective enforcement of sanitation bylaws, and take coordinated action against individuals and organizations found violating waste disposal regulations.
Officials described the signing of the MoU as a significant milestone in efforts to address the growing sanitation challenges facing Freetown. They emphasized that stronger inter-agency cooperation is critical to achieving a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable city.
The partnership is expected to support ongoing initiatives aimed at improving waste collection and disposal practices while encouraging greater public compliance with environmental regulations.
Speaking on the importance of the agreement, representatives of the three institutions reaffirmed their commitment to working together to promote responsible waste management and maintain environmental standards that safeguard public health and community well-being.
The MoU also aligns with broader government efforts to strengthen environmental governance and improve urban sanitation services across the country.
