In a significant boost to science education in rural Sierra Leone, philanthropist Joseph Sorie Conteh has donated 100 scientific calculators to Wesleyan Secondary School in Kamabai, Birwa chiefdom.
The donation aims to address the challenges faced by rural schools, including ill-equipped laboratories and libraries, and limited access to scientific calculators.
Conteh’s gesture is part of his initiative to promote science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education in the country.
“I wanted to give back to my community and make a meaningful impact,” Conteh said. “I recall sharing calculators with friends during my school days, and I knew I had to do something to help.” He added. Conteh’s initiative, which began in 2024, seeks to provide calculators to schools in need.
He encourages others to join him in serving their communities, saying it will contribute to national development.
The school administration, led by Principal Philip Issa Sesayand Civil Society representative Harold Kamara, praised Conteh’s donation as a felt need.
Community leaders also commended his gesture, hoping it would inspire others to follow suit.
“We appreciate Joseph’s kindness and commitment to education,” Philip Sesay said. He added that this donation will go a long way in enhancing science education in their school.
Conteh’s selfless act has brought joy to the pupils of Wesleyan Secondary School, who are now better equipped to pursue their passion for science and technology.
