Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs has officially unveiled the logo for 2026 Year of Culture and Creativity, marking a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to promote culture and tourism as drivers of national identity and economic development.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony on Tuesday, Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Nabeela Tunis, described the event as more than a symbolic launch, emphasising its strategic importance to national development.

“This occasion represents clarity of purpose,” the Minister said. “It speaks to who we are as a people and what we stand for. Culture defines our identity, preserves our dignity, and shapes how Sierra Leone is perceived on the global stage.” She expressed appreciation to stakeholders, creative practitioners, and development partners whose contributions helped shape the initiative.

Minister Tunis highlighted the Ministry’s structured approach to sector development in recent years, referencing the Tourism for All campaign in 2024 and the Year of Ecotourism in 2025. She noted that the 2026 initiative was developed through extensive consultations with private sector actors, cultural practitioners, and leaders within the creative industries, with the support of the Office of the First Lady.

According to the Minister, the programme aligns with key national and international frameworks, including Sierra Leone’s Medium-Term National Development Plan, the National Cultural Policy, and relevant UNESCO conventions.

She defined culture as a collection of living and evolving practices—such as music, crafts, design, storytelling, fashion, theatre, performance, and traditional skills—passed down through generations. She added that the Year of Culture and Creativity will both celebrate Sierra Leone’s rich and diverse heritage and create opportunities for innovation, employment, and sustainable livelihoods.

Also speaking at the event, Director Brima underscored the role of tourism in reflecting the country’s growth and transformation. He commended Minister Tunis for her leadership and commitment to the initiative.

“This programme would not have reached this stage without the dedication and vision of the Honourable Minister,” he said, drawing applause from attendees.

Director Brima further noted that the initiative would serve as an educational platform, particularly for students present at the ceremony, by fostering a deeper appreciation of cultural heritage and creative potential. He stressed that culture and tourism are inclusive national assets that represent all communities and ethnic groups, including those that are often underrepresented.

The 2026 Year of Culture and Creativity is expected to feature nationwide exhibitions, performances, and investment opportunities aimed at strengthening Sierra Leone’s creative economy and positioning the country as a leading cultural and tourism destination in the region.
