She said every year the UNDP would provide support to local economic development (LED) projects in local councils, adding that she was concerned about the increment in prices of the Chinese made fabric, ‘wax’ product that had taken over the local markets.

She said she chose women who were into gara tie dying for the project implementation last year and pointed out that 70 per cent of the support came from UNDP and 30 per cent from local councils.

“Last year 10 gara tie dying groups benefited from the same project. Today some of them have grown beyond what was anticipated,” she explained, adding that this year the project would benefit 10 gara tie dying groups and 10 soap group making groups.

Meanwhile, verification was underway to identify the groups that would benefit from the Le50 million. The support would be in form of buying the required materials for production and cash support.

Mariama Kamara, one of the verified group leaders, said they were happy for the support given to them by the council and UNDP, and promised that they would ensure that the materials were put in good use and the money expended judiciously.
