President Dr. Julius Maada Bio has officially commissioned the Manowa Bridge, describing the new infrastructure as a vital gateway for trade, agriculture, and socio-economic development in the eastern region of the country.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony over the weekend, President Bio said the bridge represents a significant milestone in the government’s efforts to improve connectivity and stimulate economic growth under its national development agenda.
The President noted that the project forms part of the government’s broader infrastructure investments under the “Big Five Game Changers” initiative, which aims to drive sustainable development, enhance productivity, and improve the livelihoods of citizens across the country.
“The investments my government is making are part of our national plan under the Big Five Game Changers. We are laying the groundwork for long-term prosperity,” President Bio stated.
He explained that the completion of the Manowa Bridge would strengthen transportation links, facilitate the movement of goods and people, and create new economic opportunities for farming communities and businesses in the region.
According to the President, the bridge will serve as a strategic economic corridor connecting communities and opening access to markets, thereby boosting agricultural production and trade activities.
President Bio further announced that the commissioningof the bridge marks the end of cable ferry crossings over the Moa River for residents of Kpeje West, Upper Bambara, Penguia, and Luawa chiefdoms, who have long relied on the ferry system for transportation.
He emphasised that the new bridge will significantly improve safety, reduce travel time, and enhance access to essential services for thousands of residents.
The President also expressed gratitude to the World Bank for its continued support to Sierra Leone’s development programmes and infrastructure projects, noting that such partnerships remain critical to the country’s development aspirations.
Local residents and community leaders welcomed the completion of the bridge, describing it as a transformative project that will improve mobility, strengthen economic activities, and contribute to the development of the eastern region.
The Manowa Bridge is expected to play a pivotal role in enhancing regional integration and supporting the government’s vision of building a resilient and prosperous economy for all Sierra Leoneans.
