The Minister of Communications, Technology and Innovation, Salima Monorma Bah, has emphasized the importance of regional collaboration in advancing digital transformation, economic integration, and technological development across West Africa.
Speaking at the 2026 West Africa Economic Integration and Investment Summit (WAIIS) in Freetown, Minister Bah said technology is increasingly becoming a key driver of economic growth, investment, and regional cooperation under the leadership of President Julius Maada Bio, who currently serves as Chair of Economic Community of West African States.
She noted that the summit, which serves as a precursor to the Regional Investment Summit scheduled for November, provided an important platform for engaging development partners and investors on opportunities to expand regional digital infrastructure, improve connectivity, and support the development of data centres across West Africa.
According to the minister, strengthening digital infrastructure remains essential for unlocking economic opportunities, fostering innovation, and improving regional competitiveness in the global digital economy.
Minister Bah also highlighted the significance of the recently adopted ECOWAS Regional Data Embassy Framework, describing it as an important step toward enhancing digital sovereignty and protecting critical data infrastructure within the region.
She stressed that no single country can effectively secure its digital future on its own, adding that greater cooperation among ECOWAS member states will be critical to building resilience, addressing emerging technological challenges, and ensuring that Africa plays a stronger role in shaping global digital policies and innovations.
The minister further underscored the need for sustained investment in technology and digital ecosystems, noting that regional partnerships will be vital in accelerating digital transformation and supporting long-term economic development across West Africa.
The discussions at WAIIS formed part of broader efforts to strengthen economic integration and attract investment into key sectors that can drive sustainable growth and development throughout the region.
