Presidents of three Mano River Union countries have convened an urgent meeting in Conakry to discuss rising tensions along their shared borders and explore measures to preserve peace and stability in the region.
The meeting brought together Mamadi Doumbouya of Guinea, Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone, and Joseph Nyuma Boakai of Liberia for high-level talks aimed at easing growing concerns over security developments along their common frontiers.
According to reports, the tripartite discussions were convened following a series of incidents involving alleged cross-border military movements, reports of civilian casualties, and the detention of soldiers. These developments have heightened tensions and raised fears of instability within the Mano River Union region.
Regional leaders are seeking to address the situation through dialogue and cooperation, with the aim of preventing further escalation and safeguarding the longstanding peace among the neighbouring countries.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has already warned that the dispute could have broader implications for peace and security across West Africa if not addressed promptly.
Also present at the meeting is Alassane Ouattara, President of Côte d’Ivoire, who is attending as a witness to support regional dialogue and reinforce diplomatic efforts toward resolving the tensions.
The summit is expected to focus on de-escalation measures, improved communication among security forces, and stronger collaboration among the three countries to ensure that peace is maintained along their shared borders.
Observers say the outcome of the meeting will be critical in reinforcing stability within the Mano River Basin and sustaining regional cooperation among West African nations.
