The Government of Sierra Leone has strongly refuted claims circulating on social media alleging that 400 Sierra Leoneans were recently deported from the United States of America, describing the reports as false, misleading, and politically motivated.
The allegation, which gained traction online alongside purported images of deportees, sparked public concern and widespread debate across various digital platforms.
However, responding to the claims, the Director of Communications in the Office of the President, Mr. Michael Berewa, categorically denied the reports, urging the public to disregard what he described as “recycled propaganda.”
“It is just their same old propaganda, now using AI-generated images. For accurate information, always refer to reliable sources from the Government of Sierra Leone,” Mr. Berewastated.
He further emphasised that no official communication from the United States authorities or Sierra Leone’s diplomatic missions had indicated any such large-scale deportation involving Sierra Leonean nationals.
Government officials have expressed concern about what they describe as the growing misuse of digital tools, including artificial intelligence, to create and circulate misleading content that can cause unnecessary panic among citizens.
According to the Communications Directorate, false information of this nature has the potential to damage Sierra Leone’s diplomatic relations and create fear among families with relatives living abroad.
The Government therefore urged citizens to exercise caution and verify information through official government platforms and credible media institutions before sharing.
While acknowledging that deportations are routine immigration enforcement measures carried out by various countries in line with their laws, officials clarified that such processes are typically handled through established diplomatic channels and do not occur without formal notification and coordination.
Observers note that in recent years, misinformation related to migration and deportation has frequently surfaced on social media, often during periods of heightened political discourse.
The claims have generated mixed reactions among Sierra Leoneans, particularly those with relatives residing in the United States. However, many have welcomed the Government’s clarification, calling for greater media literacy and responsible public communication.
As of press time, no official report from U.S. immigration authorities has corroborated the claim of a mass deportation of 400 Sierra Leoneans.
The Government has reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and urged the public to rely on verified information from official channels.
