November 26, 2023, will forever be remembered as a dark chapter in Sierra Leone’s post-war history — a day when national peace and democracy were violently tested. What began as a quiet Sunday morning turned into a day of terror, confusion, and mourning as armed militants launched a coordinated and brazen attack on multiple key institutions in the heart of Freetown.

Gunfire erupted near the Wilberforce military barracks, close to the presidential residence, where militants attempted to breach a heavily guarded armoury. The incident marked the beginning of what the government later confirmed was a failed coup attempt.

According to official reports from the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF), at least 19 individuals lost their lives in the violence, among them 13 soldiers who were bravely defending the nation. Several civilians were injured, and state infrastructure suffered significant damage.

The impact of the attack was not only physical but deeply psychological. Residents of Freetown were placed under a sudden and strict nationwide curfew, halting movement, economic activities, and creating a climate of anxiety and uncertainty. The incident was a harsh reminder of the fragility of peace and the lingering threats to national stability.

While Sierra Leone has made remarkable progress since the end of its brutal civil war over two decades ago, the events of November 26 served as a stark reminder that peace must be constantly defended. This attack not only endangered lives but also threatened the foundations of democratic governance and the gains made in post-war reconstruction.

The tragedy also highlights the need for improved national security intelligence, better rehabilitation of ex-combatants, and continued investment in civic education to uphold constitutional order.

Sierra Leoneans across the political, regional, and social spectrum must unite in saying “Never Again” to violence, insurrection, and unconstitutional power grabs. The price of peace is eternal vigilance, and the responsibility to safeguard our democracy belongs to every citizen.

As we commemorate the lives lost and reflect on the lessons of that fateful day, may we be reminded that our shared future depends on peace, justice, and unwavering national unity.
