The National Revenue Authority (NRA) has officially ended the 32nd Conference of Directors General of Customs for the World Customs Organization (WCO) West and Central Africa (WCA) Region at the Freetown International Conference Centre.
The conference brought together customs leaders from 18 countries, alongside private sector stakeholders. Held under the theme “A Customs Service that Protects Society through its Vigilance and Commitment,” the gathering focuses on strengthening regional cooperation and modernizing customs operations.
Ann Marie Baby Harding highlighted the changing role of customs authorities in protecting society. She stressed the importance of vigilance, integrity, and the adoption of smart, data-driven systems to respond effectively to emerging threats.
Day One discussions centered on improving institutional frameworks, enhancing collaboration with the private sector, and tackling illicit trade and transnational crime through coordinated international efforts.
The session, moderated by Maiga Abdoulaye, also featured the formation and election of leadership for the Private Sector Representative Group.
The NRA has received commendation for successfully hosting the high-level event, further positioning Sierra Leone as an active player in global customs cooperation. Additional sessions are expected to produce actionable outcomes aimed at strengthening customs systems and safeguarding societies across the region.
