The Executive Secretary of the Teaching Service Commission (TSC), Sorie Ibrahim Turay, has disclosed that Sierra Leone currently has between 77,000 and 80,000 teachers, but only about 36,000 are on the government payroll.

According to Mr. Turay, the country’s teaching workforce includes a significant number of teachers who are not employed directly through the government payroll.

He said the average salary of a public school teacher is about Le2,500, noting that salaries increase as teachers progress to higher levels within the profession.

Mr. Turay also said the number of teachers now on the government payroll has increased significantly compared to previous years.

“Before now, we had lots of volunteers in our schools,” he said, highlighting the gradual expansion of the government-supported teaching workforce.

The TSC Executive Secretary’s remarks underscore the scale of Sierra Leone’s teaching workforce and the continued efforts to transition more teachers into the formal government payroll system.
