The Parliament of Sierra Leone has approved six presidential nominees following the adoption of the Eighth Report of the Committee on Appointments and Public Service.
The report was presented by the committee chaired by Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business, Mathew Sahr Nyuma.
The approved nominees are Ambrose Michael Sovulaas Chairman, Advisory Committee, Sierra Leone Commission on Arms and Ammunition, Osman Kabbaas Director, National Council for Technical and Vocational Education (NCTVE), Ibrahim Abu Bakarr asChairman, Professional Social Work Regulatory Council, Adama Kamanda as Member, National Council for Technical and Vocational Education, HawaTuray, Member, National Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Ahmed Saybon Kanu asDeputy Minister, Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources.
Presenting the committee’s report, Acting Majority Leader Bashiru Silikie informed Members of Parliament that all nominees were interviewed under oath and assessed on their professional experience, track records, tax compliance, asset declarations, and vision for their respective offices. He noted that the committee’s recommendation reflected a unanimous decision.
Seconding the motion, Deputy Majority Whip I Veronica Kadie Sesay commended President Julius Maada Bio for the appointments and praised the inclusion of women in key public positions. She described Ahmed Saybon Kanu as a committed Sierra Leonean dedicated to peace, national cohesion, and development.
During the debate, lawmakers from both the ruling and opposition benches expressed support for the nominees while urging them to prioritize national service and integrity in office.
Deputy Opposition Leader II, Aaron Aruna Koroma, described Ahmed Saybon Kanu as competent for the position and called for greater attention to development challenges in Tonkolili District. He also highlighted the need for reforms within the fisheries sector.
Representing Bo District, Neneh Lebbie urged the nominees to focus on service delivery and ensure that public expectations are met, while encouraging female appointees to serve as role models for women across the country.
Deputy Leader of Government Business II, Emerson Lamina, emphasized the importance of integrity and accountability, calling on the nominees to work diligently in the interest of Sierra Leone.
Several lawmakers also highlighted issues including technical and vocational education, fisheries development, youth empowerment, rehabilitation services for drug users, and national unity.
Leader of the Opposition, Abdul Kargbo, urged the nominees to remain accountable and committed to public service. He emphasized the importance of strengthening Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes and expanding opportunities within the fisheries sector through improved surveillance and development of the blue economy.
Concluding the debate, Hon. Bashiru Silikie called on the appointees to justify the confidence reposed in them through effective service delivery, professionalism, and commitment to national development.
The approval clears the way for the nominees to assume their respective roles and contribute to the implementation of government programmes and policies across various sectors.
