The Parliament of Sierra Leone has passed into law, with amendments the Bill entitled: “The Employment Act 2023” for the security and development of Sierra Leone.

The Bill seeks to consolidate and improve the law relating to Labour and Employment, to provide for promotion of equal opportunity, elimination of discrimination in employment and occupation, and other related Matters.

The Bill went through several consultations, intensive debates, and amendments before passage into law.

During previous Sittings and at the Committee of the Whole House, the Chairman of the Legislative Committee, Hon. Abdul Sulaiman Marray-Conteh presented the Report of the said Committee regarding effective scrutiny and certain amendments to be adopted by Parliament before the passage of the Bill into law.

The Minister of Labour and Social Security, Alpha Timbo Esq. piloted the Bill.

Just after the enactment of the Bill into law, the minister congratulated Parliament on behalf of the President for what he described “as tedious work done by the Legislative Arm of Government”, and went further to acknowledge the role of Parliament in the development of the State. He also said that, the Act would stand the test of time and it would be one of the best labour laws in Africa.
