In yesterday’s Sittings, the Rt. Hon. Speaker SegepohSolomon Thomas gave a reminder to all Members of Parliament regarding their Primary Responsibility to their people they represent.
The Rt. Hon. Speaker made specific reference to Section (97) Paragraph (B) of Act No. 6 of the 1991 Constitution of Sierra Leone which reads: “All Members of Parliament Shall regard themselves as representative of the people of Sierra Leone and desist from any conduct by which they seek improperly to enrich themselves or alienate themselves from the people”.
The Rt. Hon. Speaker equally welcomed Members who were present for sitting after a long recess reaffirming that, Members of Parliament are to serve the people of Sierra Leone. He re-echoed that Members of Parliament were elected to serve the people of Sierra Leone.
The Rt. Hon. Speaker clarified that the last long adjourned date was premeditated to ensure the All People’s Congress Party finished their Lower Level Election and also taking cognizant of the Eid Holiday. He made it categorically clear that the decision of giving more space for the APC Lower Level Election was done in good spirit so that he could not put them in any disadvantageous position of attending sittings while their Lower Level Elections were ongoing.
The Rt. Hon. Speaker declared that work for the people had commenced adding that, Members of Parliament should be fired up as the Parliament will be having sittings frequently.
“You have been elected by Your People. You come to this House of Parliament to Serve the Republic of Sierra Leone. All other considerations are secondary. Of course I know you belong to political parties, but as long as you have been elected by the people of Sierra Leone, means that you come to this House to Serve the people of Sierra Leone primarily”, he said.
He called on all Members of Parliament to come to the House and serve their people. Speaker Thomas added that there are more than one hundred and ten ways to urge government to do certain things. He however, urged Members of Parliament not to use attendance of Parliament to urge government to do certain things.
He concluded by inviting the leadership of the APC in Parliament to a special meeting in his Chambers tomorrow at 1:00 PM Prompt.
