Lead Counsel for former President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara, has welcomed the Attorney-General’s decision to discontinue the treason proceedings against his client, describing the move as one taken in the interest of national peace, reconciliation, and social cohesion.
In a statement issued following the filing of a Notice of Discontinuance under Section 45 of the Criminal Procedure Act, 2024, Kamara said the legal team welcomed the Attorney-General’s exercise of his statutory authority in pursuit of these important national objectives.
“We welcome the Attorney-General’s exercise of his lawful authority in furtherance of these important national objectives,” Kamara stated.
He noted that the filing of the Notice of Discontinuance formally brings an end to the criminal proceedings instituted against the former President.
Kamara further emphasized that throughout the legal process, former President Koroma consistently respected the rule of law, fully cooperated with the judicial process, and complied with all bail conditions imposed by the court.
According to the Lead Counsel, the discontinuance of the proceedings means that the bail conditions previously imposed on Dr. Koroma have now been discharged, allowing him to return to Sierra Leone whenever he chooses.
“With the discontinuance, his bail is now discharged, and he is free to return to Sierra Leone at any time of his choosing,” he said.
Expressing confidence that the matter has been conclusively resolved, Kamara said the defence expects that no further legal or extra-legal actions will be taken against the former President.
He added that Dr. Koroma looks forward to returning home to continue contributing to national peace, dialogue, and development, while also spending time with his family.
Kamara concluded by expressing appreciation to President Julius Maada Bio, the Government and people of Sierra Leone, the international community, co-counsel, and colleagues for their support throughout what he described as a difficult period.
The Attorney-General’s decision to discontinue the case has drawn significant national attention, marking a new chapter in one of the country’s most closely watched legal proceedings.
