The Sierra Leone Police (SLP), in collaboration with the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) and community stakeholders, has launched a large-scale environmental clean-up exercise across Lungi Township as part of preparations for the forthcoming ECOWAS Summit of Heads of State and Government.
The initiative forms part of efforts to improve sanitation, strengthen security, and enhance the overall appearance of the host community ahead of the arrival of regional leaders, diplomats, and delegates expected to attend the summit.
As part of the operation, more than 150 Sierra Leone Police recruits were deployed to support cleaning activities at the Freetown International Airport and other strategic locations across Lungi.
The recruits were received by the Local Unit Commander of the Lungi Police Division, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Augustine Momoh Kamara, and the Local Unit Commander of the Anvil/Airport Police Division, CSP Mohamed KugbaAllieu, who are jointly overseeing the exercise.
Personnel from the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces joined members of the local community in carrying out the clean-up campaign. Participants cleared overgrown vegetation, removed refuse, swept streets, cleaned drainage channels, and sanitised public spaces to ensure the township presents a clean and welcoming environment for visitors.
Speaking during the exercise, the Police Commanders commended the recruits, military personnel, and community members for their dedication, teamwork, and spirit of national service. They emphasized that environmental cleanliness is essential not only for promoting public health but also for strengthening security and projecting a positive image of Sierra Leone to the international community.
The commanders further reaffirmed the Sierra Leone Police’s commitment to working closely with the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces, local authorities, and community stakeholders to ensure that Lungi is safe, clean, and fully prepared to host the ECOWAS Summit.
The environmental exercise is one of several initiatives being undertaken by the Government and its security partners as Sierra Leone finalises preparations to host the regional gathering, which is expected to bring together Heads of State and Government from across the ECOWAS sub-region.
