Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio has commissioned the new Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Headquarters Complex in Abuja, Nigeria, a major milestone in the regional bloc’s institutional development.
President Bio, who also serves as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, joined fellow West African leaders for the inauguration of the modern facility, popularly referred to as the “Eye of West Africa.”
He arrived in Nigeria with a high-level delegation including the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hon. Timothy Musa Kabba, and other senior government officials.
As ECOWAS Chair, President Bio played a central role in the ceremony, including delivering a keynote address and officially commissioning the new headquarters.
The programme also featured remarks from regional and international partners, including China’s Foreign Minister, in recognition of the People’s Republic of China’s support in funding and constructing the facility. Addresses were also delivered from ECOWAS Commission President Dr. Omar Alieu Touray and Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The new ECOWAS Headquarters brings together key regional institutions, including the ECOWAS Commission, the Community Parliament, and the Community Court of Justice, under one modern complex for the first time.
The facility is equipped with an 800-seat conference hall, fully equipped meeting rooms with interpretation systems, archives, a medical clinic, and parking space for over 700 vehicles.
President Bio’s participation underscores Sierra Leone’s continued leadership role within ECOWAS and highlights the bloc’s commitment to strengthening regional integration, institutional reform, peace, security, and economic cooperation across West Africa.
