President of Sierra Leone and Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Dr. Julius Maada Bio, has reaffirmed the regional bloc’s commitment to peace, security, and humanitarian response with the commissioning of key ECOWAS facilities at the Julius Maada Bio International Conference Centre in Lungi.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony over the weekend, President Bio described the new infrastructure as a strategic investment in strengthening ECOWAS’ operational readiness to address emerging security threats and humanitarian emergencies across West Africa.
“The depot is established to strengthen ECOWAS’ operational capacity and its ability to support peace missions, humanitarian assistance, and emergency response whenever the region is called upon to act,” President Bio stated.
He explained that the administrative facility has been designed to serve as the command hub for planning, logistics, equipment management, and mission support, stressing that effective coordination remains essential to the success of regional operations.
“The administrative facility serves as a command hall for planning, logistics, equipment, and mission support. Efficient coordination is the backbone of every successful regional operation,” he said.
President Bio further highlighted the significance of the training facility, noting that it will provide a platform for military, police, civilian, and humanitarian personnel from across Africa to train together, exchange expertise, and strengthen professional standards in responding to evolving regional challenges.
“The training facility will host military, police, civilian, and humanitarian personnel from across Africa to train together, share expertise, and strengthen doctrine and professionalism, enabling ECOWAS to respond effectively to evolving challenges,” he said.
According to the President, the three facilities represent a major step in enhancing ECOWAS’ peace support architecture and demonstrate the regional body’s determination to invest in practical solutions for conflict prevention, crisis response, and long-term stability.
Concluding his remarks, President Bio underscored the importance of regional cooperation in addressing common security challenges and reaffirmed ECOWAS’ collective commitment to safeguarding the people of West Africa.
“Together, these facilities reinforce our shared commitment to peace, stability, and regional solidarity. It is ECOWAS putting infrastructure behind its promise to protect citizens,” he declared.
The commissioning forms part of activities surrounding the ECOWAS Summit in Sierra Leone, where Heads of State and Government are meeting to deliberate on regional peace, security, democratic governance, and economic integration.
